Orton-Gillingham (OG) is an approach to teaching which falls under the umbrella of Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE). The principles of the OG approach include multisensory learning, which employs the kinesthetic, tactile, visual, and auditory systems; is systematic and cumulative, in that instruction will be presented in the most logical order from simple to more complex; incorporates explicit and direct instruction so no guess work is required from the student; synthetic/analytic instruction, as the practitioner explains how parts of language work together to make the whole and how the whole breaks down into parts. OG was developed by neuroscientist, Dr. Samuel Orton and educator and psychologist, Anna Gillingham and is grounded in the science of reading.
The OG approach is beneficial for all children, regardless of age/grade, and was developed to include children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD/ADHD, etc.
Each OG lesson is designed specifically for individual students based on their current progress. Each lesson includes the following components with multi-sensory reinforcement:
New concepts will be introduced following the OG Scope and Sequence and may include:
